Chairman’s Chat
I hope you are all well and have enjoyed the marvellous summer we have had, though gardeners will have been concerned about the lack of rain. We're never satisfied, are we? Ann Honour has decided that, after 8 years of organising the annual exhibition, she would like to step down from the role. She feels that some one new could bring fresh ideas to this special ‘showcase’ for our U3A – and so we are looking for volunteers for the 2011 exhibition. Please let her or me know if you are interested in being involved. On a personal note I am glad to say I have now received a date for my eye operation so hopefully at the next meeting I shall be able to see all your happy smiling faces! Thank you for all the good wishes I have received during this trying time. We welcome the following new members: Mary and Graham Thompson The Resource Centre can help you The Resource Centre in the National Office in Bromley has a collection of non-book material for all U3As to borrow free of charge. A poem sent in by Doris Roddham, which she felt was suited both to the time of year and ‘to us U3A-ers’! The reference to ‘palm leaves’ may give away the fact that she found it in a little magazine called ‘Scilly Then and Now’, when on holiday recently on the Isles of Scilly.
The fence is covered in ivy, The patio’s covered in weeds, The garden is just like a jungle And he says he’s growing more seeds!
The path is covered in palm leaves, There’s an awful lot to be done, Pruning and digging and weeding, But I think I’ll just lie in the sun.
I’ve got my own little hideout Shut off from everyone, It does need a lot of attention But I think I’ll just lie in the sun.
Mind you, there won’t be much room left If the plants keep growing apace, I might have to get out the hacksaw To give me a little more space.
I ought to attack the wild garlic But that’s not a barrel of fun, And I haven’t the strength and the get-up-and-go, So I think I’ll just lie in the sun … And shout ‘HELP!’ Mary Dean
Corsham exhibition I do hope that you found the time to visit the Corsham Library during June. If you did, will you please send us your thoughts and comments? Many thanks to everyone who helped in 'putting-up' and 'taking-down', and a special thanks to all the exhibitors, because without you we would not have anything to show. Everything is booked again for 2011, so now you all have an early warning to start your projects
Speakers for Monthly Meetings To keep the cost of speakers within reasonable limits, it would be lovely to have a few more ‘in branch’ speakers. With approximately 250 members, I am sure there must be potential speakers who could tell us about an interesting job or hobby. Do not be shy! Make yourself known to me at a branch Monthly Meeting or ring me on 01249 656102. Eileen Speakers’ Secretary Message from the Editor Please note! The next Newsletter is a joint July / August one … … So if you have any information about things happening in August, you must include them in the next (July) edition.
